  • Thoughts about a Post-Xanga Username?

While I still hold out hope that we will find sufficient funding in the next eight days to prevent the demise of Xanga, I am also pragmatically planning my next step, probably a move to WordPress. I could use your input on a username/website address.

My username is christao408 and I pay for the www.christao408.com URL through Xanga. Unfortunately, there is no news on how I could recover this URL from Xanga so am uncertain if I will be able to continue to use it.

One option is to retain the christao408 username at wordpress, with an address like christao408.wordpress.com.

Another option is to use the URL www.christao.net, which I have already registered but have not activated.

A third option is to come up with a new username and URL, perhaps one more memorable. Possible ideas are alifeinbangkok.com or lifeinthebigmango.com or something like that.

What do you think? There are pros and cons to each option.

  • I’m alaready finding the radical name changes confusing — who was that person on Xanga that I once knew!  I hope you’ll stay with something that identifies you, though I do like the lifeinbangkok options.

  • I think sticking to the old handle, christao408, is the easiest. alifeinbangkok.com or lifeinthebigmango.com also sound good (I tend to like the 2nd one more).

  • It would be interesting to know how the deal is set up with Xanga with regards to your domain name. If you are paying for it, then you should own it and be able to use it on another host. But I don’t know how they worded the agreement with you.To add to your options, I see that christao408.net and christao408.org are available…Another option is setting up WordPress on your own domain. It’s usually pretty easy to do, and I think it’s better than being something.wordpress.com. Whatever you do, I would vote for a domain name that is tied to your real name somehow, or something generic. What if you move from Bangkok someday? Then you will have to go through all this again.Whatever happens, good luck! :)

  • You knew this day was coming….ever seen Toy Story 3? theres no way in heck 23,000 will be raised in a one week. Church drives cant even do that. unless its a missions trip……for 300.anyway, Ive been here 8 years…..look at top blogs its a graveyard….all the popular people are gone….this place is beyond saving

  • @sgtowns - Was reading the 40-page Xanga domain name agreement and gave up.

  • @Jeremy_Sheer - Doesn’t Toy Story 3 have a happy ending? =D

  • @beowulf222 - Stuart added a good point that if I ever move from Bangkok, naming my site after Bangkok might be short-sighted.

  • @slmret - Yes, who KNEW that use Xangans had real names! =D

  • alifeinbangkok.com sounds great!!

  • Well if you need it, I already pay for a webhost for my own site. I can host yours too.

  • I am one of those who prefer to find the name as close to what I am used to. As get I get older I prefer not to try to think who was that on Xanga. I am one of those who has not yet made a decision as to what to do.

  • I rather like alifeinbangkok. Even if you moved away, the name would serve as a testament to all the good memories you have of there. If you find yourself over at WordPress, my username is oburi. Hope to see you there.

  • A name containing “Christao” would be fabulous. You are a man of class and erudition and so, should have a classy, erudite name.

  • I wonder if your name and Shawn would be included? It is more likely that you might move from Bangkok than leave Shawn.

  • love the big mango!

  • Current name would be easier for your many followers. If I hadn’t seen your profile pic, I wouldn’t have known who you are on FB. Perhaps you could incorporate the old with the new? Something with pizzaz that helps define your love for food, cooking, Tawn & Thailand. ♥

  • Chris, you know that Xanga has extended the deadline to July 31st, didn’t you? So may be you don’t have to panic yet.

  • @ZSA_MD - Yes, did see that good news. Still a long way for us to go in the process, though.@armnatmom @PPhilip - Good suggestions, although I am hesitant to include Tawn in the title. While I do write about him being here, I have to be careful about intruding the online personality I create for him onto his own online personality. It is like folks who come visit Thailand look forward to meeting him because they feel they know him, but he has no awareness of who they are or even what they think they know about him. Better to keep it focused on my own experiences, I think.@yang1815 - If I can get it back from Xanga!@jace1982 - Maybe I have multiple addresses leading to the same place?@Super_Rob_of_the_Sky - How about Super Duper Rob of the Sky? =D@chronic_masticator - That’s an interesting take on the name – even if I move, it still honors the experience of living here.@Fatcat723 - Well, you have two more weeks in which to ponder your options! @LostSock21 - Oh, thanks for the offer. I have a few domains already registered through GoDaddy so will need to consider my options.@agmhkg - Guess I should check if it is available, huh? Ha ha…

  • I like christao408.
